Yeah, so chronic dry mouth can be devastating for the dentition. The saliva in your mouth acts as a buffer to help to keep the acid level in the mouth neutral. So as we lose the saliva, we lose that buffering capacity.
And so like say a normal healthy person that has a meal, it takes about 20 minutes to get from an acidic environment back up to a neutral pH. Someone who has dry mouth, they’re chronically in that acidic environment and they’re going to have tooth decay that we would call what we call rampant decay. So I’ve had patients who I’ve seen many, many years and then they start to get chronic dry mouth, whether it be because of a change in their body producing saliva.
A lot of times it’s medication that’s prescribed that causes dry mouth. The next time I see him, it’s like a different person has come into my practice and we see the decay just skyrocket. So it’s very, very important that we keep the mouth moist, whether it be through doing things that are going to help to increase the salivary flow or sometimes replacing the saliva with other things to compensate for that loss of production.

Chronic dry mouth can indicate several things. Dry mouth can be caused by a simple lack of saliva production, certain diseases such as diabetes, or taking certain medications. Once we have determined the cause of your dry mouth, we can advise you on steps to take to alleviate the problem.
Depending on the cause of your dry mouth, you can take successful steps to remedy the condition. It may be as simple as drinking more water to keep you well hydrated. We can also recommend specialty products you can use at home to help keep your mouth moist so you feel more comfortable.
Unfortunately, one of the side effects of a dry mouth is bad breath. To help avoid embarrassing and awkward social situations, you’ll want to take steps to fight your dry mouth condition. We encourage you to see your dentist soon so you can get the help you need to feel confident when interacting with others.
