You know, being able to have children in the office, you know, making it a place that the whole family feels welcome, part of that is, you know, making the appointments fun for children. Their first appointment, we usually see them at age three, and we try to keep it as low-key as possible and fun for them so that it reinforces that this is not a scary place, this is a place they can feel comfortable. And for the first appointment, it may just look like putting them in the chair and briefly looking in their mouth, and allowing the hygienist to briefly get in there if that’s all that they’re able to tolerate, trying to leave them with a good memory.
We make balloon animals for the children, depending on which doctor they might see, they have a different choice of a balloon animal, possibly a sword or a hat, and something that they’re going to remember, leave them with a good feeling so that they want to come back another time. In terms of balloon animals, most boys, they’re going to ask for a sword, sometimes a dog or a giraffe, young girls, a lot of times they’re going more with an animal, possibly a bunny or a kitten, so it just depends.
