At Guilford Hills Dental Care we utilize composite fillings and amalgam fillings based off of the patient’s need. Most of the time we use tooth colored composite fillings and we do that to restore very basic small cavities inside the patient’s tooth. Generally they can last anywhere from seven to ten years and as long as the patients keep them clean, sometimes they can last even longer than that, just really dependent on patient home care.

Restore Your Smile With a Tooth Filling
Understanding your options for dental fillings helps you make the best choice for your dental health. We use digital X-rays and intraoral cameras to examine your teeth carefully, showing you exactly where decay exists and helping us plan precise treatment. This advanced equipment lets us spot problems early and treat them effectively.
Our practice offers several filling materials to restore your tooth:
- Composite Resin – These tooth-colored fillings blend naturally with your teeth and bond directly to your tooth structure. This requires less tooth modification than other options. They work well for both front and back teeth.
- Amalgam – Made from a mix of metals, these strong, long-lasting fillings can withstand heavy chewing forces. They’re often used for back teeth where strength matters most.
During your visit, your dentist will discuss which filling material best suits your needs based on the cavity’s location, size, and your personal preferences. We’ll explain the benefits of each option and help you choose the right solution for your smile. Our team will also ensure your comfort throughout the filling process, typically completing your treatment in one easy visit. For larger cavities, your dentist may suggest an inlay, onlay, or dental crown.

White tooth fillings are made of composite resin, a blend of ceramic and plastic. Unlike amalgam fillings, which are made of a blend of metals, they can be matched to the color of your other teeth so they aren’t noticeable in your smile.
Opinions vary widely on which fillings are safe and which are not. Some dental professionals feel that traditional amalgam (silver) fillings should be avoided because of the mercury they contain. However, the ADA and FDA believe they are safe and pose no threat to your health.
The life of your tooth filling depends on which kind of filling is used, its location, your oral hygiene habits, and other factors. Metal fillings typically last longer than composite fillings. For this reason, they may be better for hidden areas of your mouth that experience more force from chewing. With proper care, both kinds of fillings should last at least several years.
